2014 Roundup

In 2014, I accomplished my goal of reading 100 books; and I began to make blogging a more serious commitment than the years before. I’ve made a great number of new bookish friends, all of whom I love discussing and talking about books with, and have journeyed to countless fictional worlds and met an infinite amount of intriguing characters. I redesigned and renamed my site, and was able to set up a design shop. I am stoked with all I have accomplished this year, and I can’t wait to see what 2015 brings.

    1. I definitely did! ๐Ÿ˜€ So glad you liked The Winner’s Curse & We Were Liars – and I hope you end up liking The Young Elites just as much. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I have a feeling you’d really like her books Mel – especially since you liked Prisoner of Night & Fog – which is similar! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. I’m glad you had a great year, Zoe! Also, you read a lot of books – especially contemporary and fantasy, which are the 2 genres I read the most as well ๐Ÿ˜€ I still need to read Rose Under Fire, and I regret not buying Dangerous Girls from the store.

Here’s to a great 2015 <3 Happy New Year, Zoe!!!

    1. You NEED to read Dangerous Girls & Rose Under Fire Jillian – you’ll love them both! Right back at you Jillian – thank you! ♥

  2. We Were Liars and Rose Under Fire were such amazing books, and they are both on my to-reread list. I really want to read Margot because I haven’t read many alternate histories, which is what that book sounds like…Or maybe it’s just plain historical fiction? Either way, I love any kind of historical fiction book.

    1. Weren’t they? Gah…I love both of them so much, and I’m glad you do too! And yep – it’s an alternate historical book, which is really rare genre-wise, but it’s definitely worth the read – especially if you’re a fan of historical fiction!

  3. Ooh! I love your rating system for the number of stars you gave the books you read and the genres too. I’ve never calculated statistics of my books so I always find it interesting when I see others. I expected Dangerous Girls from you. I know you love it and lots of other readers I realized love it this year so this needs to be put on priority for me. I’m happy Something Real is on your top six because I own it but… I haven’t read it yet. I hope you have a wonderful New Year!

    1. Haha…I’m predictable when it comes to Dangerous Girls, no? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Definitely make it your priority – I hope you end up loving it as much as I did! And same for Something Real!

Thank you Adriana! Right back at you!

  4. ZOEEE I HOPE YOU HAVE ANOTHER AMAZING YEAR AT BLOGGING I WILL STICK BY YOU FOREVERRRRR. Until you get sick of me. Well in that case too bad.

ahhhh Rose Under Fire! I loved that book! And same with Dangerous Girls! I haven’t read Something Real though, or We Were Liars, and both are on my TBR. There’s a lot of books I did NOT read in 2014, sigh. Oh well.

    1.:heart::heart::heart: VAL! I WILL NEVER GET SICK OF YOU! YOU ARE FABULOUS!

So glad you share my love for Rose Under Fire & Dangerous Girls! And I hope you end up loving Something Real + We Were Liars. ๐Ÿ˜‰

*Sighs* Same with me, but there’s always next year, right? ๐Ÿ˜€

  5. You’ve accomplished a lot this year, Zoe! I’m so happy for you! Setting up a design shop is no easy feat, so kudos to you ๐Ÿ™‚

I absolutely loved We Were Liars as well, and I need to get a move on it and READ DANGEROUS GIRLS ALREADY GAH.

    1. Thank you for your kind words Maddy! ♥
And I’m so glad you liked We Were Liars too! ๐Ÿ™‚
WHAT ARE YOU DOING THEN?!? Go read it… ha! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. I also really loved We Were Liars, Rose Under Fire, and Dangerous Girls. I still need to read Something Real though. I’m glad you had a nice year and here’s to even BETTER 2015!!! Thanks again for my new design; loving it.

    -lauren

    1. They’re all fantastic, right? ๐Ÿ˜€ And I hope you end up liking Something Real when you do give it a try! ๐Ÿ˜€

Thank you, and right back at you!

  7. YAY FOR AN AWESOME YEAR. And call me silly (actually don’t, my feelings might get hurt) but I didn’t realise you’d set up a design shop! OOOOOH. THE FABULOUSNESS. So glad you accomplished a lot this year and huzzah huzzah for 100 books! Like 3 years ago I think I only read, um, 30 books a year probably. 0.0 Craziness. I love that book blogging makes me read more. ^_^ Reading is the best.

  8. There were so many YA contemporaries released this year and I can definitely see that everyone read more of it too! It was so wonderful getting to know you Zoe and wonderful to see you with a brand spanking new design and everything.

SO HAPPY To see We Were Liars and Dangerous Girls out there ^_^ Have an awesome 2015 and happy new year!

    1. There were definitely a lot of contemporaries released this year? I’m guessing because of the movie releases of TFIOS & If I Stay. We’re out of the dystopian craze and onto contemporary I guess! ๐Ÿ˜‰

How could I not have those two on here?!? Absolutely fantastic! Thank you Jeann, and right back at you! You’re fabulous!

    1. You definitely should Jess! And thank you – right back at you! You are absolutely fabulous and I can’t believe we only just found each other in the interwebs!

  9. This is a really fun break-down, I like it! I hear so many things about We Were Liars and Dangerous Girls but I keep dragging my feet about picking them up-I need to soon! Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks Alise. ๐Ÿ™‚

Definitely read those two – they’re both mind-bogglingly brilliant and twisted.

      You too! ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. I love your new design, it looks amazing especially the colour scheme ๐Ÿ™‚ I really like your idea of this wrap up post as well.

    Happy New Year Zoe! <3

  11. OOOOH Zoe We Were Liars was a definite favourite for me as well! And ok I’ve seen EVERYBODY rave about Dangerous Girls and I’ve had it for ages but never read it so I guess I really need to get on it lol.
Love the new theme too ๐Ÿ˜€
And I read the most contemporary too!

    1. JAZ! You need to get on Dangerous Girls pronto! ๐Ÿ˜‰ If you liked the twisted and mind-blowing ending of We Were Liars, you’ll definitely feel the same way about Dangerous Girls. ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. I love your new blog design! ๐Ÿ˜€ I hate to say that I haven’t read any of the books you loved this year. I haven’t even read your runner ups! I’m so behind on my 2014 releases and reading… *hides* Here’s to another fabulous year. <3

  13. This is so bad, I haven’t read any of your top 6 aside from We Were Liars and I didn’t really like that one. >< Although I really want read them all! Especially Dangerous Girls! I've heard such amazing things about it. Happy new year Zoe!

  14. Dangerous Girls was also a big thing in my 2014. Goodness, that book revolutionized what YA Thrillers mean to me. But whoa, only three 5-stars?! I hope 2015 will give you even more quality books and up that number a little!! Happy New Year, Zoe!!!

    1. The book that revolutionized YA thrillers is right!
And thanks Faye! I’m really picky with my 5-stars, so it’s rare to see one for me, so even 3 is a huge number – haha! ๐Ÿ˜‰
      You too!

  15. This is such a great wrap-up – it’s informative without overwhelming us with too much information. Your favorite books section contains so many amazing titles! Dangerous Girls made my list, Rose Under Fire made it last year, and Margot came SO close. And yay for YA contemporary! It’s long been my favorite genre, and I love that you read from the genre more than any other this year.

    1. Thank you Emily! And I’m so glad to hear you loved those three books too! ๐Ÿ˜€ And yeah for YA contemporary! ๐Ÿ˜€

  16. Very nice year you’ve had! I really enjoyed Islands at the End of the World too, and I cannot WAIT to read Something Real! And Dangerous Girls was so mind-blowing, of course!I really want to read Margot too.

I think 3.5 would probably be my most-rated too, but I only had Goodreads stats since I only switched to WP in October, and I round up on Goodreads, so it was a 4. Hope you have an amazing 2015 ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thank you Shannon! ๐Ÿ˜€ I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed Islands at the End of the World and Dangerous Girls too! ๐Ÿ˜€ And I can’t wait to see what you think of Margot + Something Real!

*sighs* Oh Goodreads…I wish they would implement half stars…

      Thank you! You too!

  17. I really loved Dangerous Girls too. I haven’t read the rest, except We Were Liars which I didn’t like as much as I hoped I would. I must check out Margot and Rose Under Fire.

I’m so glad you had a lovely year because you’re honestly one of the nicest bloggers I know, Zoe! Hope you have an even more successful 2015. ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. I’m so glad you liked Dangerous Girls, and I can’t wait to see what you think of Margot + Rose Under Fire!

And aww! *hugs you* Thank you so much – that means a lot! Right back at you!

  18. I have heard so many amazing things about Dangerous Girls (and also Dangerous Boys) I really need to have them in my life.We Were Liars was also a favourite of mine, I really didn’t expect what was coming but I know quite a few people did so it ruined it for them. I was blissfully unaware and then I was TRAUMATISED. Queue hysterical crying (and I happened to be on holidays in Alicante at the time, probably not the best book for a holiday!).

    1. If you liked the mind-blowing twists at the end of We Were Liars, I’m pretty sure you’ll like Dangerous Girls as well because it also has a similar twist at the end. ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Bloody hell, how organised is your yearly wrap up? Geez Zoe, you’ve put us all to shame. You’ve had a lot of pretty good reads this year, most being between 3 and a half and four stars. It really was year of the contemporary wasn’t it. Congratulations on your design services, no doubt you’ll be overrun with requests for work.

Thanks for an awesome year of friendship Zoe and happy new year poppet <3

    1. Haha…It’s actually Ashley’s UBB plugin. It has a wrap-up feature. ๐Ÿ˜‰ And definitely the year of the contemporary – most likely because of the success of TFIOS. And aww…thank you! ♥ Right back at you!

    1. There was definitely a lot of focus on contemporary this year, no? And you definitely need both of those Rachel! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  20. WOAH, you had NO 1 star this – last – year? That’s so amazing. Yet, not many 5 stars either ๐Ÿ˜› I like the layout of your new blog, but I think I told you already? OH, LOVED DANGEROUS GIRLS, as you probably know already. OH, HATED WE WERE LIARS…

    Happy New Year!! <3

    1. Thank you! I’m pretty picky when it comes to both one and five star reads. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I only rate them that if they’re the best of the best or the lowest of the low. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      You too!

  21. Congrats on completing your reading goal, Zoe!! I hit a reading slump halfway through the year so I only managed to read… um, 27 books in 2014. *hides* YES, I AM ASHAMED. Another thing that makes me feel ashamed is how I’ve only read book on your Top 6 books of the year list — Rose Under Fire. And I totally agree that it deserves to be at the top! That was the second book ever to make me cry, I think, because it was so heartbreaking. It’s books like these that make history seem so real, and I just love it.

Haha, I think I only rated one book 5 stars this year, and that was Ruin & Rising by Leigh Bardugo (it’s the last book in the Grisha trilogy, and Zoe, you ABSOLUTELY need to read that series if you haven’t yet. IT’S EPIC. *O*). Really hoping 2015 will be a much better year, book-wise!

It’s a little late, but HAPPY NEW YEAR! I’m so glad I got to know you last year — you’re such a sweet and friendly person, and I love reading all your reviews! <3 Here's to a great new reading year for the both of us! *raises Butterbeer*

    1. 27 books is still absolutely fabulous Megan! ๐Ÿ˜€ No need to be ashamed!

And Rose Under Fire is so unbelievably sad. While I liked Code Name Verity a lot, Rose Under Fire took the emotional torture to an entirely new level.

And I loved Ruin & Rising! ๐Ÿ˜€ Definitely worthy of your 5 stars. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Leigh just has such a beautiful prose. ๐Ÿ˜€

And you too! Right back at you! ♥

  22. I can’t believe that you only handed out 3 5-star ratings last year. Either the books you read were to blame, or you’re just tough to please. I haven’t visited in a while, but I love the new look / name. Congrats on the design store; I hope you do good business in 2015!

    1. I think it would be that I’m really picky – ha! I only hand out five stars extremely sparingly; so even having 3 five star reads is a pretty big deal for me. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      And thank you Carmel! <3

  23. I’ve read two of these six–We Were Liars and Rose Under Fire, and I thought they both were very good–and although I haven’t read Margot yet, it’s on my to-read list. I’ve been drawn to all things Anne Frank since reading her journal years ago, and this book sounds like such an amazing concept. I’m so glad to hear that you loved it enough to include on your list of 2014 favorites!

Also, thank you very much for stopping by and commenting on my blog. ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope you have a wonderful reading year in 2015!

    1. I’m so glad you loved We Were Liars & Rose Under Fire as well! ๐Ÿ˜€

And I’m the same way about Anne Frank. She’s such an inspiration, and if you’re into her too, then Margot is definitely worth the read. ๐Ÿ™‚

And anytime! ๐Ÿ˜€ Thank you, and you too!

  24. Congrats on reading 100 books! I somehow only made 99… That’s so cool that you design themes now! The only book on your list that I’ve read is Young Elites. I enjoyed your breakdown. I gave most books 7-8 stars too. Wow you read so many genres! Mine was all fantasy and scifi lol. I hope you’re having a good new year so far!

  25. I love reading these poss (: I just find it so nice to read how other people’s reading life went and discovering new titles.

First off, congrats on making your 2014 goal of 100 books. That was my goal in 2013 and I did it. For 2014 my goal was 101 books…yeah. That didn’t work out at all, only got like 52. This year I’m keeping my expectations low and aiming for 50 books.

One thing about me is that I ADORE historical fiction. It combines my love of history with fiction and everything is just wonderful and perfect. Despite my all encompassing love of the genre though, I actually have not heard of Margot or Rose Under Fire Before ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I’m actually shocked of this, can’t believe I missed such gems. The fact you enjoyed them so much makes me even more excited to give them a shot as I just know they’ll be brilliant. We have similar reading tastes afterall <33

  26. Good on your for completing your goal of reading 100 books! Mine was originally 100 as well but I read so many that I increased it to 150.

YAY for We Were Liars. I’m so glad it made your list, Zoe ;D I also really liked The Winner’s Curse. I received Dangerous Girls AND The Young Elites for Christmas so I hope to read them ASAP! I also want to read Rose Under Fire, because I really liked Code Name Verity! The twist was quite fabulous.

Congratulations on opening your design shop! I wish you all the success <3

  27. I see 3.5 stars is your default rating. ๐Ÿ˜‰ YAAAY I LOVE YORU BLOG (OBVIOUSLY!!!) AND YOU ARE AMAZING, ZOE, AND I CAN’T WAIT FOR ALL THE DELICIOUSNESS YOU’LL BLOG ABOUT THIS YEAR. *bookish twin hi five*
