Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

My name is Princess Selene Blackburn. I have returned and I am here to take back what is mine.

Winter is a fabulous conclusion to a fabulous series. Marissa Meyer has clearly grown so much as a writer since the beginning of Cinder, and Winter just proves how far she has come and how much she has improved.

She was prettier than a bouquet of roses and crazier than a headless chicken. Fitting in was not an option.

The Lunar people say that Princess Winter is even more beautiful then her evil stepmother, Queen Levana. But Winter has loathes her stepmother and has been secretly undermining her for years. Now, with the arrival of Cinder, Scarlet and Cress, Winter may finally be able to start the revolution she’s been waiting for.

Princess Winter is such a diverse and well-developed character. She refuses to trick people by using her glamour, which leads her to suffer from extreme hallucinations. Yet, despite her deteriorating mental state, it’s clear that Winter is a strong, intelligent and fully admirable character.

Winter’s romance with her palace guard, Jacin, was, like all of Marissa’s romances, written beautifully. The chemistry and dynamics between the two were absolutely perfect.

“I fear tomorrow will be even more difficult for you, Sir Clay. Do try to think of me when you can.”
“Try, Princess?” He smirked, meeting her gaze again. “I can’t seem to think of much else.”

Cinder, Kai, Scarlet, Wolf, Cress, and Thorne make a reappearance in Winter, and they all continue to blossom and develop as characters, as well as in their romantic relationships.

Cinder is ready to take bake the land that is rightfully hers, and her romance with Kai continues with its trademark awkwardness. Scarlet is done being a prisoner, and now she is ready to fight with Cinder; her romance with Wolf strong and ever-present. Cress is determined to help Cinder in any way she can, alongside cocky yet attractive Caswell Throne.

Marissa wraps the series up wonderfully. Whether or not the characters get their happily ever afters is for you to see, but, no matter what, the journey these fabulous characters take is sure to entertain you.

  1. YOU SPEAK THE TRUTH, ZOE! Marissa has improved so, so vastly much since Cinder, and nowhere is it more glaringly obvious than in Winter. It just smacks you in the face.

Oh, there was villainy and tyranny and madness and destruction, and IT WAS SO MUCH FUN. (Which, uh… Who said that? Me? I don’t like villainy, what are you talking about?)

Scarlet and Wolf are my continuously-suffering snarky babies. <3

  2. I could have sworn I commented on this-Deja Vu? o.O Anyways! I’m up to Cress in this series and have really enjoyed it so far. It’s great to know that ended on a great note and that the characters went through a lot of development, I can’t wait to meet these new players! Nice review 🙂

  3. Hey girl! It’s been awhile hey!? I miss you so much Zoe. You don’t even know.

But yes, Winter was a great finale to this series. Honestly one of the first books I’ve read since September that wasn’t a textbook LOL. It was so much fun, I tore through the pages. I definitely agree with you that Meyer has grown so much as a writer. If I’m honest Cinder wasn’t my fave but wow- this is definitely one of my favorite series now.

Also my lovelies Scarlet and Wolf <33 They've been through so much and are definitely my favorites.

    Amazing review boo! (:

    1. I’ve missed you so much Larissa! I hope school is going well and that you’re getting back into the gist of things. So glad that you found this to be a satisfying conclusion as well! xx

  4. I need to read this!! I had it on my list for my secret santa so I was holding off getting it and now that I have my package I need to get Winter, but I have no money.
I just need to finish this series; I love it way too much. And I got my mum reading it too, so we are both hanging for it.

  5. I really liked the conclusion of this one. VERY satisfying. *beams happily* I liked how Marissa Meyer wove in the Snow White elements though!! SQUEE. It was just awesome to see the apple and the glass coffin and everything. :’) SHE’S SO CLEVER. I’ll read everything she writes basically.

    1. SUCH a satisfying conclusion, right? And OMG – I didn’t even notice the whole coffin connection until you mentioned it! Brilliant!

  6. I have yet to read this series. I tried it a long time ago and could not get into it. Maybe I’ll try it again, you made it sound so good! Lovely review, Zoe. I’m glad you enjoyed Winter!

  7. I didn’t read the Lunar Chronicles series, so I will admit that I didn’t read this review entirely, because I didn’t want to be spoiled, ahah. But just reading the first few lines, about how the author grew up while writing this series, makes me want to read it even more. There are series that have disappointing endings, and this one doesn’t seem like it. I’m so curious about the hype around this, so I will maybe read it soon! 😀

    1. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR THEN?!?! 😉 It really is an amazing series though Marie – I can’t wait to see what you think of it when you start it. xD

  8. I can’t wait to read this!! I read the rest of the series earlier this year and now i’m just waiting for my library to get it in… I just might cave and buy it though! I just skimmed your review since I haven’t read it, but I’m so happy you’re satisfied. 😀

  9. EEEK! I’m so excited to read Winter! I honestly don’t know how Marissa Meyer writes the romance so well! We have three (now four) totally different ships, and I LOVE ALL OF THEM!! Winter sounds like an awesome character, and I think she’s going to be my favourite of the series!:)

    1. So glad to hear you’re so excited for this Ranu – especially since you loved the first three books in the series. You won’t be disappointed!

  10. Ah, Zoe, I can’t wait to read this myself! I love Marissa Meyer’s work and have always found her growth as an author evident throughout the series; I’m so happy to see that her writing gets only better with this one. In addition, the characters are what MAKE the book, so hearing of strong development brings me joy.

I threw this on my Christmas wishlist, but your review has me wanting to read it this weekend! I’ll have to use my winter vacation time wisely. 🙂 Excellent post {as always}!

  11. Yaas, I loved this conclusion too! I read those 800 pages in one day, no problem. IT WAS JUST TOO AMAZING. And I’m soooo glad that there’s side stories coming out next year (one of them is an epilogue! *cue heavy breathing*) I am absolutely excited for that one. Fantastico review, my dear!

    1. So glad you enjoyed this as much as I did Aila! And I agree, it was just so action-packed that it didn’t feel like 800 pages at all. xD

  12. I had to skim through this because I haven’t even read Cinder yet (I KNOW, I’m ashamed of myself) but I’m reading it soon! So excited, and great review! 😀

  13. Aww I loved Winter so much! This novel restored my faith in series conclusions because I’ve encountered with a couple of terrible ones this year. I’m glad you enjoyed it, too! Wonderful review. :))

    1. There have definitely been a few underwhelming series conclusions this year, but luckily this wasn’t one of them. 🙂 Thanks Veronika!

  14. I can’t believe WINTER is already out, and I still haven’t read CRESS! Why am I so behind on series that I love? I was so excited for CRESS, but then when I finally had a copy, I never picked it up 🙁 I am thinking of re-reading the first two books and then finishing the series next year! Because it’s so good, and I don’t want to have forgotten anything important.

I’m so glad that WINTER is such a good conclusion to a great series! Winter herself sounds like a great character, and I cannot wait to finally read this book 😀

    Great review, as always <3

  15. I must admit, I tried to read Cinder years ago when it was first released and just couldn’t seem to get into it at the time. I actually bought all the books and waiting for Winter to arrive and plan on binge reading them over Christmas with some much needed time off. I love how previous characters from the first three installments make an appearance, it gives you that little piece of familiarity. Wonderful review as always Zoe, really looking forward to cracking my series open now <3

  16. You’re so right, Marissa Meyer has improved a lot since Cinder! I loved Jacin when he wasn’t in palace-guard-mode and was teasing Winter; he’s so much more relaxed then. 😀 Great review, Zoe!

  17. GAH I really need to read Cress and Winter asap. I’m glad I brought them on break with me, because your review just made me want to dive in right away. It’s a fairy tale break–I’m doing Ensnared by AG Howard now, then back to Marissa. Lovely review, m’dear! <3

  18. I love the diversity that Marissa Meyer has imbued into the series. It seems to get better with each instalments judging on the reviews I’ve been seeing – which is excellent as I thought Cinder was a little bit unmemorable. I can’t wait to get onto the rest of the series!

    1. Cinder was a bit unmemorable for me too to be honest, but each book gets better and better. I hope you feel the same way. 🙂

  19. I LOVED WINTER SO MUCH. asd;lkjsf

    *calms self*

But yes, I totally agree. Marissa has definitely grown as an author, and Winter was all that I had hoped it would be, and more. I was so pleased with it and with the entire series, and yeah. I’m excited for Stars Above and Heartless. 🙂

  20. I’ve had this post up on a tab for ages because I wanted to finish reading Winter before I read it. Your review is SO spot on! The romance between Winter and Jacin was so swoony. I love that Jacin is kind of prickly and a lot of the other characters didn’t really trust him, but Winter always saw the good in him. And it was so great to finally have the full cast all together!

    1. I think Jacin & Winter are my favorite couple of the series. Or Scarlet & Wolf. I don’t know, it’s really a toss-up. xD

  21. I really like how Marissa managed the four retelling through out the entire series! Like you can’t find out the Cinderella ending in Cinder, instead in the ending of Winter! And I really love Cinder &Kai and Scarlet & Wolf!
